The Nigerian Army has refuted reports of a recent mass kidnapping in Borno State.
Residents of Damasak reportedly told Reuters on Tuesday, March 24, that 506 people had been taken from the town by Boko Haram insurgents.
The Nigerian Army has however said that the report is a total fabrication that bears no iota of truth.
This was disclosed on Wednesday, 25, by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Sani Usman during a press briefing.
“It is not true. It’s is all lies and I don't just want to start discrediting any news agency but this particular medium has been in the habit of dishing out false news like in more than four occasions now,” Usman said.
“Please there is no 500 people that was kidnapped,” he added.
Damasak has been the centre of controversy ever since its recapture as Chadian troops accused their Nigerian counterparts of being too afraid to reclaim the town while Nigerian authorities accused the Chadian of lying about their conquests.
